Caregivers have been ‘wearing’ (carrying with the aid of some kind of cloth or wooden framework) their babies for thousands of years. Some even say the baby sling was the first human invention — unlike other primates, our newborns are not strong enough to cling onto their mothers’ fur (and, hey, compared to chimps we don’t have much of it). So human mothers used animal skins to the same effect.
And voila, a fashion accessory was born.
